need a service laptop recommendation

i need to get a laptop for diagnostics. i do field IT stuff.

i do not need nor want a widescreen. 12" or 12.1" is just fine.
i need good battery life.
i dont like touchpads.
i need it to be lightweight and portable.

these are not on my list of considerations because i can easily change them if everything else is good:
i will be swapping the HD for a 7200rpm since most laptops come with 5400.
i will also be swapping ram if needed.

not sure if i need a serial port, but there is a good chance i will be working with older high end routers. but i can get a USB to DB9 adapter if needed.

i am looking at a lenovo x60 or x60s...the batt life is...7 hrs or something crazy. (with no optical drive), but i dont think i will need one.

i would like to see what other people would recommend. $1,600 is pretty steep for my budget, even though i'm sure it would be worth it.

thanks,
Leon
