Need a serial port on my wife new lappy. What would be the best approach?

Hi, I just bought my wife a new eMachine M6805 lappy. It, of course, does not have a serial port. I need a serial port though, for LS1 Edit. That is software to program the computer in mine and my wifes 98 Z28's. Changes the timing, air/fuel ratio, torque management, ect.... The cables for it is serial port based.

So, what would be the best approach to add a serial port? PCMCIA? USB? Other?

Here is the link to the laptop so you can see what interface is available to add the serial port with. 🙂

PS: The cheapest way possible is the best way. LS1 Edit cost $600 total for mine and my wifes cars. And the lappy cost over $1000. So, I would like adding the serial port to be as cheap as possible. 🙂

Thanks for any help. 🙂

USB to Serial adapter. They're pretty cheap, and show up in Device Manager as a COM port (almost always the next available one, so if you've only got "COM1" listed it will show up as COM2 🙂

Hi, sure i'm sure. I do the work on all of my cars. The headers and cam in my car really wacked out the stock programming. I will at first program the computer without the wideband 02. But I will eventually get it wideband tuned. But I can get it much better than it is right now even without the wideband 02.

So it looks like I will get a usb to serial port adaptor. Thanks for the help.
