Hello all, been a little while since I have posted in here, but I am hoping someone out there can help me out. A customer brought me an HP desktop that would not post. The power supply checked out (I have a tester) and the switch worked (fan come on and stay at full speed) so I put in my diagnostic card and it would not go off DO.

So I ordered him a new motherboard. I couldn't find an nVidia 6150 on newegg, so I ordered a Biostar with the nVidia 7050 because he runs his business off the thing, and I figured it would take too long to restore windows, re-install, and backup all his data, so that is why I ordered a board with the nVidia chipset.

The problem is I ordered Thursday between 2 and 3 (would have been 11-12 on the west coast) with next day air and rush processing, and it did not ship thursday evening or AT ALL friday.

My question is (yes I finally got around to it) would an AMD chipset board work without having to re-install windows? I local store has an MSI with the AMD 690 chipset in stock. Thanks in advance for any help here.

P.S. I am also a little disappointed with Newegg. I have never ordered with rush processing before but always have my order shipped by the next business day. The only thing they found time to do in a day and a half is charge my card.

Old HP desktop? The very BEST thing you can do for your customer is build him or sell him a new computer and copy the data off his old hard drive.

It might work, but since you weren't able to uninstall all the drivers prior to swapping the motherboards, you might run into some problems. It's probably best to back up his data and do a clean install.

Boot to the Safe Mode the VERY first time you turn it on with the new MB, and uninstall the Chipset Drivers, IDE/SATA Drivers and Network Adapter Drivers.

Reboot and install the proper MB drivers.

BTW, some programs might stop working, since they are HP exclusive, and MUST recognize the HP BIOS.

Thank you for your replies, In this case, an "old" computer was only a year old, and he was in such a time squeeze, that we avoided the AMD board altogether. He bought a new HP desktop with the nVidia chipset so all I had to do was swap hard drives, and install the new chipset software and graphics drivers. Having to re-install windows would have been the absolute worst thing in this situation, as he misplaced the discs to some of his software, and needed it for a very large business deal he was in the middle of. Computers going down at the absolute worst time is just a fact of life I guess.
