Need a recommendation on a 56k modem

optimistic

Diamond Member
I'm looking for the best modem between the $15-$30 range.

I was considering between:

Pine Conexant 56K/V.92 PCI Modem
Trendent 56K/V92 Internal PCI Winmodem w/voice Rockwell Chipset
Diamond Supramax V.92 56K PCI w/voice Internal
Creative Labs Modem Blaster 56K V.92 PCI

All I know is that V.92 is the way to go.
And that I should avoid win modems and soft modems.

<< i would reccomend the US Robotics V.92 modem if your isp supports v.92. >>

I didn't know you have to have an isp that supports v.92. Hmm...can someone give me some examples of isps that support v.92? I'm not so sure if poetworld can support v.92 its costs only $8 a month.

There is a reason to my previous modem suggestion (see above post). It has the Lucent WinModem chipset, which is considered the best among WinModems, and it cheap.

The current dominant dialup protocol is v90. V92 is new and at the moment, it is not clear how it will take hold, most of ISPs are not yet supporting it.

Given the prices, it is better to buy a cheappo, and wait and see what is going to take place.

A quote from the above link:

When will my ISP support V.92?
Historically, new communication standards are made available in client modems before the network modems, and this will be the case with V.92. Industry-leading network equipment companies are currently testing V.92 and it is anticipated that ISPs will have V.92 ports available by the last half of 2001. Of course, not all ISPs will upgrade to V.92 at the same time. You can email your ISP and ask them when they will launch the new standard.

Don't get anything with a conexant or rockwell chipset, they really suck. I personally dislike all winmodems which is all you'll get for 15-30, but the lucent is the lesser of all evils. Spend a little more and get a quality modem, you'll have alot less headaches later

Thanks for the advice. I think ZOOM modems have the lucent chipsets, I'll look into that.
