Need a recommendation for networkable external hard drive enclosure

Title says it all. I'm not sure what these would be called (NAS? NDAS?) but I would like to get one that's simple to setup and not accessible from the outside world.

Connection to the outside world is up to you it is Not inherent in any of the NAS'.

Recommendation?

Hard to recommend any of the sub $500 NAS'.

If you would post a budget, and what yo are planning to do with the NAS it would easier to provide focused answers.

It'll be as simple as can be. I just want a device that can share a hard drive between two computers. Do you think it'll be better if I get a USB enclosure and get one of those USB to Ethernet adapters?

If you put a regular external USB2 External HD on one computer, you get the full speed of USB2 drive, and you can Share the Drive through Drive mapping with another computer through the Network ( http://www.ezlan.net/sharing.html#map ).

Advantages, faster, less expensive.

Disadvantages, the computer with the Drive has to be On when the Drive is needed for the other computer.

NAS device, a standalone Network unit with an Hard Drive that is attached to the Router's switch (or any other Network?s switch).

Advantage, each computer can access the NAS' HD regardless if the other computer is On.

Disadvantages, Expensive, Entry Level NAS' very slow, and might have restriction on NTFS.

And your choice is?

The latter.
