Epson Perfection 3170...but if Price is no object you could go with their top of the line Pro for a few hundred $'s more, to me it's a waste.

If

Then you must have a specific need, which will affect the choice of scanner
as some scanners are better than others at doing specific jobs.

Are you primary scans........
color photos ??
black and white photos ???
color slides ??
plain old black and white text ???

Suggest you select the scanner for the intended purpose
required and not assume that price alone will give you the best
scans for your intended use.........

It's going to be hard to find a high end scanner at a B&M that you could easily return. Most of the places I have been to B&M wise sell scanners that are priced under $400. That's not really a "high end" scanner, more of a mid range. That being said you should check out the product line that Microtek has out now. They have a lot of nice products out now and are priced very reasonably compared to the competition. They sell them at Best Buy, Office Depot, Staples, Fry's Electronics, etc. to name a few B&M ones.

It seems that Epson scanners are always at or near the top marks in any review. Other factors may modify your choice - say if you want it to work with Linux. I have a Visioneer that I got for about $25. AR and it works fine for my needs. Even if you get some other brand of scanner, you may want to consider Visioneer's PaperPort scanning software. It's about the best of breed.
