need a quiet fan for my athlon xp

At least I think it's my fan that might be loud. I also have a sparkle 350 watt power supply. Could that be louder?

I have an athlon xp 1800 with the stock fan. Lately, though, I've found it to be too loud, so I want to buy a quieter one. I don't overclock, though something that allows some flexibility would be nice. Would I need a new heatsink as well? I don't want to spend more then about $30 for this.

1.) the best way to narrow down the noise culprit is to just start unplugging things to see if it effects the noise. i think that when you do this you'll find that your power supply is making the most noise followed by your heatsink.

2.) unfortunately, quiet = expensive so you'll either have to mod the power supply with some quiet fans or get a quieter unit like the enermax whisper series, antec true power or Zalman.

3.) as for the heatsink. the best combination right now IMHO is the Thermalright AX-7 w/ a low CFM fan like the Panaflo L1A.

**** Hope this helps, try the Cases/Cooling section if you need more help ******

i think the biggest noise problem is my power supply like you said. i just guessed this from putting my ear next to the power supply, and it seems to be where the noise comes from.

however, getting another would be a problem. i doubt i will be able to unless i can sell my old one to a friend. in that case, what would you recommend (something from newegg preferred)? the antec truepower series?

where can i get panafalo's that are relatively cheap and quiet? is there another good fan i could get that's available at newegg?

www.frozenpc.com Panaflos @ 6-6-11 $ Yes they are quite🙂

hmmm. i can't seem to find any panaflo's at www.frozenpc.com
where are they?

also, where i can find a thermalright ax-7 and a power supply? what's a good quiet power supply? is my sparkle 350 watt psu considered loud? would an antec truepower be significantly quieter?

As has been suggested, you really need to get scientific to identify the biggest noisemaker, work on that first. It's probably the cpu, vidcard or northbridge fan, rather than the psu.

I like to boot from a floppy for testing, makes it easier to start/stop. Open up the box, hold the cpu fan to keep it from starting, boot up. wait 30 seconds or so, let the fan run to compare the before & after. Shut down. Do the same with the chipset and vidcard fans, if you have them. Never try to stop a running fan. You won't cook anything in this short period of time.

If it turns out to be the cpu hsf, replace it with a gc68 from SVCompucycle or Galaxy Monster from Nexfan- they're the same thing. Not that these are some super performance unit, they're not, but they'll give about the same temps as stock on XP's in the 1600-1800 range with a lot less noise, super cheap.... They won't fit boards with tall capacitors near the socket...

There are other solutions for other noise problems, but you need to be sure what's the problem before you'll get results....

not trying to be a d!ck, but how loud is everyones stuff? maybe i am nuts, but in my computer room, there are atleast 2 machines, both with 4-6 fans in each (2 case, 1-2 psu, 1 cpu and 1 on the m/b itself), 2 hdds, 2 cdroms and i don't even notice them. are your machines that noisy or do you all just have excellent hearing? even now, it is extremely quiet at my place and i barely here the hum from the machines, in fact the hum is somewhat soothing...

It's one of those things where everybody's different, and have different circumstances. What's OK in a dedicated computer room could be annoying in a quiet den or bedroom. and some people are more sensitive to noise than others, just like some are more sensitive to bright sunshine or scratchy clothes....

And you wouldn't really mind if your own computers were quieter, would you?

i understand that everybody is different, but i have seen this exact question in many different forums, i was just wandering how loud others stuff was. my computers sit under desks, maybe that is why i don't notice them. to be honest they could even be louder and i wouldn't notice...
