I applied for a position yesterday within my company (HP) through their job website. After that, I just sent an email to the hiring manager, just to say that I am very interested in the position.

I got an email back from that person today stating

Thank-you for your interest in my position. I am currently reviewing resumes and will inform you if you are a top candidate. Top candidates will be interviewed this week or early next week.

As an observation, you resume does not really address the "data center" needs of my position.

Good luck,

The job description is such

This position is focused on managing two data centers located on the Roseville campus which are shared by a number of groups in the HP Storage organization. Your responsibilities will be to ensure the data centers space is used optimally as new equipment is brought in, balancing power, cooling and location requirements.

Additional responsibilities include testing HP storage in a heterogeneous SAN environment. The testing responsibilities include configuring, test execution/development, documenting and root cause analysis for any issues found while testing.

Reqs:

Demonstrated experience in lab space or systems management. Demonstrated configuration and/or administration skills with at least a subset of the following operating systems: HP-UX, MS Windows 2000, MS Windows 2003, Linux, Solaris, AIX, Tru64, OVMS, Netware. The ability to work independently in a multi-tasking environment. Demonstrated ability to communicate both verbally and in writing to cross functional teams.

In my resume, I did mention that I have experience working in a lab enviornment, and that I have extensive experience with software testing and what not. I don't have my resume handy, otherwise I would have posted it here. I believe I changed my resume a bit to suit this position.

What I want to know is what an appropriate reply would be. In other jobs I have applied for, I don't even get to know why my qualifications were undesirable. Atleast in this, I know and I can maybe say something in my defense.

What should I say? I am guessing something like this

Mr. Sonny Crockett,

Thank you very much for your response, I appreciate you taking time to look at my resume. I understand that you are looking for candidates who have experience in a lab/data center enviornment. I do believe that my internship at HP has provided me with an opportunity to work and learn in such an enviornment. .... and then I don't know what to say.

Any hope or just another lost cause?

In all seriousness, just tell him straight up how you feel. If he has a bias against you for some reason, this is the best way to get rid of it I think, unless you save his life or something. If its up to him who gets the job, you need to appeal to him quickly make sure he knows you really want the job.
