Ok..I say quick because I just sold my old 1700XP+ for $43.00, not bad, but now I need to order a new one quick so here is what i am asking...

Here is my rig:
Windows XP
ECS K7S5A
512mgs DDR 2100
Athlon XP 1700+ (1.47ghz) (will be replacing)
RADEON 9800 PRO
Catalyst Driver version 3.8

Okay, what would I have to go up to to notice a real difference? Something that would compliment my 9800pro without breaking the bank..what about a 2400+ (2ghz) something that will give me good scores in 3dmark 2003 to go along with my decent scores just based on my 9800..thanks..

2400+ would work fine. It's cheaper than a Barton 2500+ (and may be faster in some apps) and it lets you keep your PC2100 ram.

the barton 2500 has double the L2 cache and has been knoown to overclock well (2-2.2+ ghz), i'd go with that.

Guys, here is what someone told me...is this true:

K7S5A's won't do 166FSb w/o mods & a lot of prayers. PC-2100 might do 166FSB, but unless it is very good,: timings will be awful. You sold prolly the best CPU for that mobo & I speak from experience on all counts.

Your best bet for that mobo is a $75 2400+ Thornton 1.8g from Newegg. It runs 133FSB stock & you can prolly get 143FSB w/your system & the Cheepoman BIOS from OCWorkbench. @ 143FSB you'll be pushing 1.94g.

Don't expect a lot out of that mobo & ram, even with the Thornton & 9800 > it has a slow memory controller & is a ~3yr old design

Is this true...will i be able to go with a 2400+ If so then id like to and then upgrade my mobo later, but I need to buy something faster now then upgrade later..

Sounds like good advice. You're still getting an extra 366 mhz for $30. That's how much some people spend on a HSF!

I say you just get one of those 50-70 dollar frys/mobo combo deals. They retired the 1800+ one though I think :(. I was able to get a kt 333 with a duron 1.8 ghz. This works very well. I currently have this one running at 2.3 ghz. Also, the default mulltiplier on this is 18, so you should have plenty of headroom for oc'ing given a limited fsb. If you'd like to pay less, the duron 1.4 ghz is available online for 35 dollars. With 1 simple L2 mod (all it is is putting some metal compound in a small hole), you can possibly have 256kb of cache... these are very nice.
