Need a quick check before I buy

I am trying to build mid range system around core i5 2500k as cheap as I can. After a lot of research (bugging my friends / google), this is what I came up with:

case: $60
Rosewill CHALLENGER Black Gaming ATX Mid Tower
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...l%20challenger

psu: $100
CORSAIR Enthusiast Series TX650 V2 650W
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...-020-_-Product

CPU: $225
Intel Core i5-2500K
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...-072-_-Product

Heatsink: $58
Thermaltake Frio
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...maltake%20Frio

Motherboard: $140
MSI P67A-G45 (B3) LGA 1155 Intel P67 SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 ATX Intel Motherboard
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...&SID=u00000687

Ram: $50
G.SKILL Ripjaws Series 4GB (2 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1600 (PC3 12800) Desktop Memory Model F3-12800CL9D-4GBRL
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...-277-_-Product

GPU: $175, 155 after rebate
XFX HD-685X-ZNFC Radeon HD 6850 1GB 256-bit DDR5 PCI Express
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...-505-_-Product

Hard Drive: $40
Western Digital Caviar Blue 500gb
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...-073-_-Product

dvd: $23
LITE-ON Black 24X DVD+R
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...-335-_-Product

total: $871

Could I get a confirmation that all these parts are compatible and will go well together? Any last minute suggestion that I should look at? I am very welcome to cheaper alternatives.

I play a lot of games and also do a simulation codings that strain resources. I will also probably do just a light overclock, nothing serious, thus the cheap mobo. I feel like $100 on psu is pretty expensive, considering that I don't even plan on doing SLI or xfire, but one of my friend is very adamant and insisted that I overspend and get a good psu.

If all goes well, I will probably order everything by the end of the day.

Thanks

Looks good except I would go with a bigger, newer HDD

Not familiar with that cooler, but this one is very popular with SB builds:

You could save some money by going with a smaller PSU, like maybe a 550 W Corsair.

I went with the small HDD because I already have 2 2TB external ones and beside applications, I generally store everything on the externals. I like your heatsink idea, I think I will do that. It is cheaper too.

So you think a 550W psu is enough for my set up?

Get the cooler master hyper 212+ heatsink. Cheaper and works better. Never buy anything thermaltake IMO.

Get a faster hard drive. 1tb drives are not much more money and are much faster along with having double the storage. There is a $30 off promo code which makes it $70.

Here's a combo deal that saves money on the 2500k and the memory.

Edit: stargazer beat me to it.🙂 great minds think alike

Always get a little more psu than you need IMO. Say you want to upgrade to a more power hungry graphics card? If you have that 650w you'd be fine. Get the 550w and you would need to upgrade both. Ever heard the saying do it right or do it twice. That applies here.

Flawed logic on the hard drive also. A hard drive is going to be the biggest bottleneck in your system. A faster hard drive is going to make everything speedier. Games load faster, applications start faster, better multitasking, faster file transfers, etc.. Now get a slower hard drive and all those go in reverse. Slower game loading, slower application starts, slower file transfers, etc...

Do not skimp on the power supply or hard drive.

That's a good point. I'm not much of a gamer so I didn't think about that.

It's just that after messing around with a Kill--A-Watt I found that the really huge PSU's are overkill for most applications.

The GTX 570 with an OC'd i7 930 only pulls 446w So really a 550w is good for any SINGLE GPU. Unless you are going to be upgrading to a dual GPU config or the GTX 580/590 or 6990 a 550w is fine and a 650w is basically overkill.

Right now the latest neff sale has an antec tp 650w for cheap. Also the 650w xfx ps is <70 after rebate. Both would be saving options for a good ps. Also with the current sale you can double your memory for $29. The best part is that it is the sniper line, which means no heatsink clearance issues.

There are some other good deals in the current sale.

HEC Blitz case will save you $20.

Antec NEO ECO 520C will save you $40 and it is more than sufficient for your proposed setup, with hundreds of watts to spare.

XIGMATEK HDT-SD964 is only $25 with free shipping. Sure it isn't 120mm, but it still uses quad heatpipes and a PWM fan. It should be more than sufficient even for overclocking.

HDD is the only place I'd say spend more money. My recommendation would be a Samsung F3 1TB. It is out of stock right now, but Newegg has it for $55 after coupon code. It isn't just the capacity, it is also faster than a WD Blue.

It's okay to have nice parts sometimes. Sure he could get by with those parts. IMO I'd rather have a nice heatsink and watch my CPU idle in the 30's and load in the 60's while being overclocked. I'd rather have the nice heavy ass power supply. Sure it's a little overkill but I bought the nice one and they used the best quality components and I get the nice little modular cables. As far as the case goes I like it when they look nice as well. I like a little extra room so I don't scrap my knuckles Everytime I get into my case. I like having it quiet and still cool as a cucumber.
Personally for me I enjoy building and admiring my work. The bottom line isn't always the deciding factor. At least not for me anyways.

People seriously overestimate their PSU requirements. A lower wattage PSU does not mean that it is lower quality. I would take the NEO ECO 520C that Zap posted over an Ultra 1KW anyday.

OP, a 6850 is not exactly a power hungry beast of a card. You'd be fine something like an Earthwatts 380 if you don't plan to upgrade to a high-end GPU (midrange GPU from two years from now would be fine).
