so, we're looking to buy a new, widescreen TV. granted, I don't know anything about this, so I need your help! (cue music)

anyways, what shoudl I look for? looking for around 40-50", HDTV support, flatscreen

so gimme a quick rundown of what qualities I should look for, and suggest some TVs for various price ranges ($4,000-5,000, $5,000-6,000, $6,000-7,000), although I suspect the 5-6k range will be what we end up buying.

and while on the topic, suggest a good HT setup (all the necessary equipment).

I know, for all you HT buffs, I'm sure you get this question a lot. please help, it would be greatly appreciated. thx :)

Will you spend $5-6k PLUS stereo, or including it? If the latter I'd probably recommend 3k on the tv and 2k on the audio, all said and done for 5k. A big ass tv falls on its face if you haven't got the sound to back it up ;)

For $5k you are spending way too much on the TV, if you are looking at 40-50". I recently purchased the Hitachi 50" LCD RPTV for $3k. A CRT RPTV in the 50" range will run you $1500-$2000. (EDIT: Noticed that you mentioned flatscreen, so does that mean you are looking at Plasma?)

I like the Hitachi, mostly because it weighs less than half what a CRT RPTV of the same size does, so you can actually move it around if need be (though you have to spend some money on buying a TV stand since the LCD and DLP RPTVs are tabletop models, rather than floor standing).

Spend a bit of time in the RPTV Forum @ AVSForum and you will learn more than you ever wanted to know.
