i'm at a friend's house putting windows 2000 pro on his aptiva(ick) but i'm having a problem. I told it to do a clean install and convert to NTFS, but it didn't format the disk and get rid of windows 98. So i am doing the installation over again, and the only way i can seem to get it to format the disk and THEN do a clean install is when it says to select a partition(8gb drive, no partitions) and it says you can delete the partition. I'm wary of doing this because i can't get it to boot off of the cd, so if it doesn't work i'm up sh!t creek without a paddle. Will doing a 'delete this partition' format the drive and then install win2k? please help! i didn't have this problem on any of the other computers i've installed this on  :(

i DID tell it to boot from the cd but it went from the hdd instead, which has me completely confused. order of booting goes:
1. cd
2. floppy
3. hdd

it never even scanned the floppy drive

ok new problem. I tried to delete it but it wouldn't go. My only option was it hit enter. I can't boot from DOS, a floppy or the cd rom, so how in holy hell do i format the drive? this is quite aggrivating.

I've always made boot floppies from the install cd, and booted the pc directly from those. Never had an issue at that point with wiping the partition, and then formatting the drive in NTFS.

unless the bios order is flip-flopped, the computer WILL boot from a floppy by default.

if you use a win98 boot disk, it will load all the basic drivers on a RAM drive, where you can now load win2k. As for installing win2k, as long as you have a legit CD or burned the ISO correctly (usually only one way to burn an ISO), it should have worked fine.

Also on most of the systems I have seen you need to press a kiey to get it to boot from the CD after selecting it in the BIOS

now that i remember, win2k prompts you to boot from the CD if you have it in the drive during the boot sequence. Otherwise, it'll load the default OS.

There is no key combination to boot from a CD. It either does it or it doesn't. Once again, verify the boot settings that CD is first on the boot list.
