Need a program to recover lost data

Been looking for a program to recover lost data on a hard drive. I tried a few but so far they all seem crappy (keep getting errors cuz the application crash for exemple). I just need a good program to recover something once.. so a trial could do the job I guess (as long as it lets me recover the data). I'm not willing to pay for this to.

Any suggestions?

What kind of lost data? Deleted or HD crash?

If you had a HD crash try SpinRite.

Would Windows recovery work? Did you try it yet?
