Need a processor for a HTPC... low heat?

I don't like Intel, just on principle... I don't know what to get from AMD that is relatively low heat and low cost. I am looking at the Athlon XP Mobiles on Newegg, and they seem to be good; but I don't know. Any info here is great, thanks.

Either the Athlon XP Mobiles (as you found) or an Athlon64 would be a solid bet as both have pretty low heat output and excellent FPU power.

Use an old system, or build a low end system, then use a hardware MPEG encoder and/or decoder. Many people have great HTPC boxes running on old P2's and the such with hardware encoders.

I would go for a mobile XP, as they are good 🙂 (Just got one myself, haven't installed it yet because I'm waiting for my heatsink).

Oh, and what's a good heatsink/fan for the Athlon Mobiles... I don't want to spend an obscene amount of cash on it, just something pretty quiet 🙂

Okay cool... so now why aren't they on ZipZoomFly.com 🙁

Newegg charges me tax 🙁

Newegg, like always, is doing you a favor. If the Feds audit you and find out you haven't been paying your internet taxes, then you can get screwed. Newegg isn't forced to charge out of state people a tax, but if they are doing so, they are doing it to prevent you from having to pay a lawyer later. You should thank newegg for doing your taxes for you.

As for a processor, Mobile Athlon XP is the way to go. You can always underclock it, if it's too much power. I have a thermalright SP-97 (w/ a 5V fan on it) and a mobile barton 2500+, its running at 73 degrees F right now. For encoding, get a Hauppauge 250-PVR MCE.

I think a 2200+ XP mobile is plenty fast for my HTPC.. hell it's faster than my DESKTOP right now! 🙂

Anyhoo, I just need to find some decent cooling now... 🙂

NewEgg does not charge tax to anyone out of state. Just like any other online retailer they have to collect sales tax in states where they have a physical presence. For NewEgg that is CA, TN and NJ.
