I was taking notes during class on my Axim. I was working off of a Powerpoint slide that is stored on the SD card. When I went to go save the Powerpoint with the notes that I had taken, I got a message stating:

"A memory error has occurred. Press the Hardware Contact button to try to continue, otherwise a Hard Reset may be required."

I pressed the Hardware Contact button which did a soft reset. After reboot, I realized that NONE of my notes had been saved.

THIS IS UNACCEPTABLE. The notes that I take are a lot more comprehensive than anything my classmates would be taking, and I don't feel confident depending on my classmate's notes to replace the notes that I had lost. Had this been for something more important than just a class, I don't know what I would be doing.

If it had required a hard reset my Axim would be smashed against the ground right now. Sure, all the data is synced with my PC, but such data loss and still unacceptable.

I've personally never liked the design of the Axim. The fact that it will lose all data when it is totally out of power worries me a LOT. The fact that it runs on volatile memory all the time except for when the user specifically saves to a memory card is not good.

Can someone recommend me a replacement PDA with non-volatile memory as its main "working" memory?

I guess I could go for a smartphone. I have Verizon though, if that makes any difference.

Verizon should have its version of spring mogul fairly soon and it might be an option (as wm6 fixes some of the problems you mentioned) but is only qvga (I know dell had some vga screens not sure what yours was) and the screen is smaller then on a regular pda (but it does have a keyboard). The regular pda market is mostly dead, between smartphones and umpc's (mostly smart phones) everyone (except for sharp, and they don't sell well here) has basically stopped making regular pda's.
