Need a picture storage idea for my SD600.

Here is the deal. I am going to jamaica in 3 weeks and I will be bringing my camera. Currently I have a 2gb card and I don't think that will be near enough storage. I would like to have at least 10gb or so and don't want to spend a ton of money on a bunch of flash drives. I also don't want to bring my laptop and have a chance of it being stolen.

Does anyone have any other idea (maybe some type of portable drive that will DL all the contents of a SD card?

*ding* Winnar. 1GB cards are $20 on Newegg. Spend $100 and you've got 5GB.

I doubt you'll go over 7GB in a week. 5.0MP images are about....3MB each, IIRC.

do you really need to shoot 5MP in full? heh... I'd say you can drop back a bit and grab a few cards and be done with it.

I don't like the portable HDD's to be honest. I'd be too afraid of corrupted data... which I would end up bringing a laptop anyway.. haha

Scale back the res on your camera. The most you'll need is 2-3 mega pixels. If each picture is only 1MB each, you should have plenty of space. No need in taking too many pics....you won't enjoy anything. Honestly, I took my 3.2MP camera with a 1GB card and it lasted me 2 weeks easy. If you think you need more space, those cards are only $20-30 now online. Order one from the egg to take along. It's cheaper than any other solutions.

Call me paranoid, but when we go on vacation we put copies on at least one laptop + one external hard drive + leave as many pictures as possible on the cards.

If you drop back the size of the images a notch you can get like 400 pics per gig.

If you have a couple 2 gig cards that's like 1600 pictures. That is A LOT of shots.

The place I went last spring had internet access. You could upload the pictures to an ftp. I never used it though so I can't say if it was very fast or not.

I really don't see anything being cheaper than just buying a bunch of 1gb or 2gb cards though.

Any hard drive based backup device will include a laptop HDD and an enclosure that allows transfer of data from memory cards. The laptop HDD may cost $60 for a 40GB, and the enclosure can cost $60+, for a total of $120+.

It's your call.

I for one cannot go without one. I used to use my little Archos Gmini 220 MP3 player to back up photos, but it is slow. I then used a special HDD enclosure that I got from newegg, but that one really stinks because it doesn't display any status indicators. I had to have faith in it that my pictures had even been transferred. I plan to get something with a screen next, perhaps something like the Hyperdrive HD-80 or something else in that luminous landscape link above.

thanks for the info guys. i plan on taking vids with the camera too, those eat up some space. I may look into photodisks a bit more.
