Yeah, picked one of these up.

Was buying the 10th-Gen HP slim Celeron units with 4GB RAM and 1TB HDD new on ebay for around this price. This is an 8th-gen quad-core (no HT I don't think) for similar price, with double the RAM.

My suggestion is to get a 500GB SATA 2.5" SSD, and replace the HDD, or get a 500GB WD Black or Samsung 980 NVMe and install it. (I *think* that these should take an NVMe upgrade, at leasat my 10th-gen HP slim Celeron units do.)

i3-8100's are going for ~$150 to ~$180 on our favorite used part outlet right now. I have no idea why.

You are correct, this is a no turbo, no HT 3.6 ghz i5 from the 7th gen Intel CPUs with 8th gen branding. ECC support, too, I think.

Socket 3 indicates PCIe x4. Socket 2 is limited to x2.

This seems to be a bit of a "bum deal" for me. I can't get any video output over HDMI. Then again, maybe my HDMI cable has kicked the bucket. But I just used it recently with some mini-PCs (Deskmini) a few days ago.

No POST / BIOS on my 4K UHD screen. Seems to be booting Windows. Keyboard caps-lock is toggleable.

Edit: Yep, HDMI cable went out on me! Now working great, both the onboard Intel graphics as well as the LP Asus 2GB GDDR5 GT710 in it.

Edit: I will say, the unit that I received was totally pristine, looked untouched by human hands. The only way that you could tell that it was refurbished was by the OEM key sticker, that had refurbished in the OS string.

You CAN fit a LP GTX 1050 ti 4GB card in these, the slot spacing will fit. Also, includes built-in wifi, and also has a PCI-E NVMe M.2 slot.

I agree about the condition of the unit, very hard to tell it's a refurb. Extremely quiet too.

I'm impressed with its performance as well. After swapping out the HD for a SSD the boot time from power on to the login screen is about 5 secs.

I have a feeling that these were new old stock, returned unsold to consumers to the mfg, who then packages in brown boxes with a refurb OS sticker, and resells onto the secondary market.
