Need a new wired or wireless router, question about firmware

MustISO

I've been looking at the D-Link DGL-4100 or any of the 4xxx series of Dlink routers. I would also consider going with a LINKSYS WRT54GL to be able to use the 3rd party firmware.

My big concern with the routers is that the companies tend to release new products and stop updating the firmware on the older models. For example, the DGL-4100 (while still sold) has not had a new firmware update since 2006.

I don't need wireless so that would go unused but I'm fine with buying a wireless router if I had to.

You're right -- the DGL-4100 is "End of Life as of March 01, 2009", but it's still usable. The DGL-4300 which shares much of its guts had a firmware release in 2008, but they only listed some minor changes.

The DIR-655 is from the same line, has similar QoS support, and has faster underlying hardware, and is current for the time being.

I'd really like to find a wired router that performed well rather than paying for a wireless router. Seems like they all have issues so I guess whichever has the fewest issues is the one to go with.
