Who are the reputable glass vendors? Similar to auto repair, vendors don't tell prices up front and I don't know what's a good price or not...

I used safelite, think it was ~$370 on a 07 Milan. It leaked the first time I took it through a car wash so they came back and re-sealed it. Was fine after that.

While I prefer to use local shops; double check the warranty.

Many will not cover anything once you are out of the area

I've used Safelite before too. It was about $120 for my 2000 Nissan Maxima. No problems or leaks.

You have to be careful when buying auto glass on price alone.

Lots of the "aftermarket" glass is much "softer" than OEM glass and both scratches and pits easier.

Not all glass is equal.

Comprehensive collision on a 7 year old car with 11K miles isn't recommended.

Thanks. They did say it is OEM, complete with same blue visor tint.

Comprehensive and collision are two different things. Comprehensive insurance on my 20yo car with over 250k miles is $20/year.

Doesn't everyone automatically carry comprehensive insurance as part of their auto insurance?

And it should cover glass.

Maybe elsewhere, but not up here. I can remove it from my cars if I wanted to, but at $20/year for the MR2 and $30/year for the Subaru, it's not worth the savings for the loss in coverage.

I'm still not quite sure from what the OP said whether or not he has comprehensive coverage. If he does, MA is a zero deductible state for windshields (like FL), so his cost would be nothing. And, if it's like FL in other respects, they can't raise your rates for making the claim.

Nope. It's an option to be $0 deductible for windshields. You can waive the option and pay a deductible for a lower premium.

Also, getting your windshield replaced under insurance counts as a claim. You will not see it on your current insurance, but it shows up when you go shopping for new insurance. It's a not a huge increase, but there is an increase in premium.

QFT...also many policies has a blanket covering windshields even if you have basic coverage.

Glass claims are NOT treated as a claim in my state (CT), and probably not in most states. Just made a windshield repair claim, was told specifically by my agent that it's not treated as a claim-and, if I recall it correctly, the recording on the claims line said the same thing.

Safelite told me that most insurers will handle up to three glass claims per car per year without balking.

It's probably different in every state. When I was shopping for insurance, they said that I did not report a claim so my quote changed. It was only $20 more, but when I investigated it, the claim was for replacing my windshield.

I don't believe that's correct. I have had to get my windshield replaced a couple of times and have changed insurance companies to get a lower price. And this is before they changed the rules for insurance companies to increase competition.

Well, yeah...back then, insurance was regulated by the state in MA. So everything had to be done the way MA wanted it done and at the price MA said (the rates were set by the state). This included what you could do to raise rates. Now, they can price whatever they want (well, almost) and make any excuse they want for insurance increases.

It does not matter anyways, because it only increased my quote by $20 and after I switched companies again (from Progressive to Geico), that claim did not seem to matter anymore.

For $20, I did not care. I went from paying $2500 a year to $600 a year, so $20 did not make a difference to me. As you can see, I for one enjoy the new insurance rules in MA.
