Need a new video card

My budget for a new card is probably around $150 to $200.

I'm wondering if I should get an 8800GT or 8800GTS or wait for the 9800GT. Any word on how much the 9800GT will cost?

I just read that 9800GT is roughly the same as the 8800GT but its cheaper to produce. Does that mean it's cost will be relatively low when it comes out?

If the 9800GT is going to be the same as the 8800GT, should I just wait for a different card? I'd want Nvidia (cuz I'm on Linux) but I don't know what card.

ALSO, I have a 400 watt psu powering an X850 Pro PCI-E right now, which is supposedly a pretty demanding card for power. Will I need a new power supply along with whatever card is suggested I get, or could I just stick with this one?

Thanks

SHIMATTA!

i really suggest waiting a wee bit longer to see if the new ATI and nvidia cards are worth getting.

How much would those new cards cost? I feel like I'm pretty opposed to buying a new ATI card atm, since the ATI drivers for Linux are lacking....quite a bit.

Well Most 9800GTx 512MB cards are around $300 right now, is not within your budget. For you 8800GT should be the best choice, it has very good performance and their price is around your budget, a recent deal on the XFX GeForce 8800GT 512MB video card with free game is $150. The 8800 gt card has better performance than the 8800gts cards.

The 8800GT is faster than the 8800 GTS G80 core not the new G92 core. The 8800GT is the best bang for the buck as that goes its in your price range but it all depends if you can wait a little bit on the new cards from nvidia. As for me i would go ahead and get the 8800GT. XFX has the package deal for around 150 bucks but i would allways go with an EVGA card, you cant beat there warranty.

Does anyone know if I'd need a new power supply for the 8800GT? Is the 8800GT more demanding for power than the X850 Pro VIVO, or less?

Look on your PSU sticker and give us the amps ratings on your 12v rails please...

It's an ULTRA PSU, and its 20A on the 12V rail.

I know these are pretty bad PSUs overall, but I already have an X850 Pro running on it, which is fairly demanding for power. I'm wondering if I need a new PSU for the 8800GT though.

how many rails does it have and does it support rail fusion? 20 amps should be fine with that card

20A is going to be very tight. I believe the minimum is 22A for an 8800gt. You're the guy who also did that E2200 BSEL mod to 3ghz on the ECS board right? In that case, you really need more power. And we don't even know what else is running in your rig w/r/t # of HDDs, etc.

The Antec Earthwatts series are on sale every other week. Look for something with at least 32+ amps combined on all the 12v rails.

Yeah, I did do the BSEL to 3 ghz. I'm running just 1 hard drive and 1 dvd burner, but yeah, I see your point.

I'll look into another power supply then. Would the Antec Earthwatts 430 be enough? It's $30 this month, so that would be a nice price.

Do you guys think the 9800gtx will drop in price significantly after the new cards are announced?

That earthwatts will be fine. I think it's also single railed so amps on the 12V line shouldn't be a problem.

Both the Earthwatts 430W and 500W are dual 12v rails with 17A each for a total of 34A. The difference is the 500W version has 24A on the +3.3v and +5v rails versus only 20A on the 430W version. Also, the 500W has 2 PCIe connectors compared with 1 on the 380 & 430W.

The 430W should be enough unless you plan to carry this PSU over to another rig someday where you'll go with an overclocked quad or even SLI'd 8800s. Then I'd choose the 500W instead.
