Need a new video card; will my other components hold me back?

Currently running a system that I put together in 2007ish that's a Q6600 2.4ghz, 4gigs DDR2 800 (I think) RAM, and an ATI4850 512mb. Over the past year I've found that certain games I simply can't run; the screen will go black, the sound will loop, and a red light will come up on the video card itself. Different drivers haven't helped and I've attributed it to the video card just finally dying since I've pretty much had it on for four years straight. I can play Skyrim decent-ish at medium settings 1680x1050, but now it's doing the same error that stops me from playing, so I've decided to replace the video card.

I'm not interested in running everything maxed out, running smoothly at medium or high would be fine for me. My budget is $150ish, and it seems most people recommend the 6850 for that range. If I buy a 6850, just how much will my CPU and maybe RAM hold me back? I'm pretty sure I could bump the Q6600 up to 3ghz even but I'm not sure if that would help much. Would a 6850 be a good idea in these circumstances?

Have you cleaned the dust out? 4850's ran pretty hot. Maybe your cooler is clogged up. If that's all it is you might be able to wait for the 7000 series in Dec/Jan. If not, and the card is truly buggered, as happy medium says the 6870 @ $140AR would be a good upgrade. Definitely O/C that CPU too.

Passive cooler, temps are fine even under load. As far as I know that's a pretty clear sign of a dying card but I could be wrong.
