Criterias are

needs to be easy to empty or throw away bags
good suction and can handle animal hair
low maintenance (easy to find parts and)
under $300
Quietness is a plus but not necessary

That's what I hear....

Can you elaborate on incredible? :)

I hope to keep this vacuum for the long haul in an apartment. So any suggestions for model would be helpful.

I don't know how else to elaborate, I've got a 2000 dollar canister vac that I never use now and it can't hold a candle to my dyson.

I can endorse the Mach5 ? I bought one from Walmart last year guided by this hot deal. Unfortunately, the price hasn't decreased at all since then. The most common complaint seems to be its weight: it is quite heavy.

Whoa, how can that be so cheap if it is in fact a similiar performing clone!? Time to look for some reviews.. :) thanks
As I understand it, Dyson's patents on its first-generation technology expired, allowing effective clones to be made. As far as I can tell, the Mach5 seems to filter fine dust well.

This is the best advice you will get, its much cheaper but its rated VERY highly for a good reason. I was just shopping for a new vacuum a couple of months back and this is what i got and no regrets.

I heard a lot of great things about this one a long time ago and was about to pick one up. But I ended up not buying anything due to money constraints.
Can the bags and filters be bought in stores stores still, i heard from someone they were only available online or something. Could be wrong though.

Can't comment on that specific vacuum, but Bissell has excellent customer service.

I have one of their Lift-Off brand vacuums. Bought it at least 3 years ago and the lower part of the unit (the floor brush tool) stopped working due the canister/floor tool connector corroding and breaking off.

Anyway, I emailed Bissell on a Friday night asking what part it was and if they had it in stock. They responded to my email on Saturday telling me to cut off the cord and put it in a pre-paid postage envelope they were sending me and that I would receive a replacement vacuum about a week later.

The unit that arrived is definitely an upgrade from what I had. My vacuum was definitely out of warranty, so they didn't have to do send me anything. A huge thumbs up to Bissell

I always have hated bagless..... hence why i highly considered the eureka. But I feel like it'd be nicer on the environment to just dump my wastes in the trash, reducing the need for bags. That's why i hopped over to the Dyson since you don't need to change anything out for long intervals of time(you just rinse the filter?). But getting a recommendation for a vacuum is worse than asking for recommendations for music.

We had (and still have) an Electrolux and thought it did a good job.

My daughter bought one of those fancy yuppified pieces of pretty colored plastic called a Dyson, and I gave her nothing but shit for buying it...until she brought it to the house and made me shut my fat mouth!

Our housekeeper vacuumed the entire house with our Electrolux with a brand new bag installed.

Then, my daughter vacuumed the entire house with her Dyson DC-15 animal.

OMFG!

In every room, the Dyson pulled out enough dirt and pet hair to fill the canister!

We were shocked! Our housekeeper was amazed.

(gawd I hate the taste of raw crow!)

We went out and bought our own Dyson, and the Electrolux became my garage vacuum for cleaning spills, vacuuming cars, etc.

We've had the Dyson for over 2 years, and I still can't say enough good things about it.

We've been married for 33 years, and have owned all types and brands of inexpensive vacuums, so when she finally roped me into buying a house, she wanted an Electrolux.
That's what her parents had, so she knew the quality...(it IS a good vacuum, but the Dyson does a better job)

its not which is the problem, its hyped and under performs. consumer reports tests find it only has average suction, and it costs more mostly for looks.

people go ga ga for it because the looks color their perception. they hardly do scientific tests, and they compare performance to their old worn out vacuum.

The best vacuum we've had in the past 10 years is a $35 Bissell we got from Wal-Mart (or K-Mart...I don't remember which).

It uses bags, and does just fine with dog/cat hair etc.

Edited to correct brand.
