Need a new system

I just picked up a 46" Sony XBR the other night and had my buddy over to help me wall mount it. We got it up and he started to talk to me about getting a small computer, Like a lan pc for my tv so I can access my network and pull all of my stuff off from my other computer. He said it was called a media pc and it could be built for pretty cheaply. So on to the point, Can I build it, What do I need, Is it cheap? and Can I get it from newegg?
I'm just going to be using it for accessing the internet, my lan, movies and music. I was thinking about gaming alittle (strategy mostly) but I'm not sure if it will be another arm and leg.

Thanks

Any halfway respectable computer should be able to handle the duties of a home theater pc (HTPC) or media pc or whatever you want to call it.

ATI's All-In-Wonder line of graphics cards is one of the more common series of cards for use in this type of machine. They're pretty much available anywhere. Newer ones especially should be able to handle most games you throw at them and will also have a ridiculous set of outputs to connect to about anything.
