Need a new SLR - Photo class

I have a Nikon SLR my dad gave me but the shutter is having some issues and need a new camera. I'm looking to spend $100-$200.

If it doesn't come with lenses, my current Nikon lenses should fit, I have a camera from the Nikon FA series I believe, early 90's camera.

I have no issue buying a used camera on ebay either, but if my lenses won't fit, it should at least come with one.

Any reccomendations/advice is appreciated 🙂

Oh, and this is all film stuff, no digital photography

You should be able to find loads of used Nikon FG's on eBay, in camera shops, etc. Sturdy, reliable, basic SLR. Perfect for students.

While that's nice I'm looking for something a little better now, hopefully something I can keep longer

Thanks Anubis 🙂

If anyone else has reccomendations please tell me, otherwise I'll either go with the N80 or the Canon Rebel K2

/me thought this was going to be a McLaren/Mercedes thread...like you needed one to photograph or something...

Was your dad camera droped?

Take a closer look at the Nikon before you purchase a new camera.

What is exactly wrong with the camera?
Is the shutter sticking?
Is there a shutter or time lag?
Is it under or over exposing?

Replace the battery if it is dead, or clean the battery terminals with an eraser for a clean contact.
Check or use the exposure compensation if there is a shutter variant.

IMHO, purchase a used camera for the class and save your money on more important things like films & papers.

good luck.

Get the N80, I love mine and used it for absolutely everything.

And I went to your HS, so I know it will cover everything you need 😀

I've changed the batteries already.

The shutter is only working when I'm in bulb mode, nothing else. My teacher told shutter problems usually cost more so I'd be better off buying a new camera.

What do you reccomend I do to check?

what are your current lenses

that would be teh easiest way for me to tell you

a picture of them would be bestm with full model name and such

It supports all of my non F or G lenses that are nikon, it just won't have full auto functionality, but they will still work

Here's what it says on one of them:
Zoom-Nikkor 35~70mm 1:33~4.5 2177427 Nikon

Other one:
Sigma 1:3.5~4.5 f=75~210mm Multi-Coated

the 35-70 is a manual focus lens. it shoudl work with the N80 but it wont auto focus and it most likely will only work in manual mode

the sigma is a AF lens and it should work fine

Awesome! Thank you VERY much! 🙂

I might end up getting the N75 though just because it would be new, come with two lenses, a bag, and a tripod for about the same price unless you guys feel there is a big difference.

I don't plan on using this camera a whole lot to tell you the truth, later on when I want to start doing more photography on my own I'll be going digital
