Need a new Router...Which one?

I'm getting sick and tired of my Netgear WGR614 (version 1) router dropping connections. It's about as fun as cancer. So I'm looking to replace it w/a new one.

Now....before I get flamed for not searching....I've searched, but I have some specific questions btw these routers:

Linksys WRT54GS
Netgear WGT624
D-Link DI-624

Which one has the best range? Which one drops the FEWEST connections? Any other routers in this range that are better? Do any 802.11g routers exists w/gigabit ethernet for the LAN?

I can't find any good comparisons btw these routers in 802.11g mode--NOT the super-dooper-pooper fast 108 mode, I have no use for that. So I'm looking for the best performer in 802.11g only! Which one is it?

And, again, before someone rants about the belkin pre-n router...I don't want it. My current netgear router was a "pre-g" model and I've had all kinda problems w/it....never again.

Thanks for any input. 🙂

I've had nothing but problems with netgear wireless routers but thats just my own experience. I have used that Dlink and it worked great when I set it up. The linksys has open source firmware's you can flash it with allowing you to have access to many features such as signal boosting.

All of the wireless routers you mentioned are listed on the Top 5 Wireless routers in the November issue of PC World. I've heard that Linksys has great range but I decided to go with the D-Link setup because I like the smaller footprint it has and I got a great deal (both router and PCI card) locally compared to the Linksys.

It was easy to set up and I do get up to 100% signal reception at times with the client computer a few rooms away from the router. Surfing the web and downloading on the client computer is like having it directly connected to the router - hardly any noticeable slowdown.

BTW, the PCWorld article gave the Netgear WGT624 their highest marks and rated it best buy. It's all good, though and I am satisfied with my D-Link.

Good luck in finding your next router.

you know its funny, I would suggested the wgr614 v5 . 😉 Ive been reading about the wgr614 and it does look like all the past version has had a big flaw here and there. Thankfully enough it seems version 5 has fixed them all. After owning a linksys and dlink, I like the netgear a bit better. the built in config is more profesional.

I just setup a WRT54GS at my G/f's house. I tested it here for a week before I took it there. Love that damn little thing. I have a the Linksys speedbooster G card in her Laptop and have a Cat5 drop to another comp off the routher. Will be hooking up a wireless desktop next week and putting another laptop on it. Make sure you get the linksys Speedbooster cards if you get the GS model.

There have been some reports of problems with the GS and some say to get the regular 54G but I had no trouble at all. It has awesome options, WEP128, VPN, upnp, B-only, G-only, or mixed, and all the other bells and whistles. What more could you ask for?

The range and power seem to be fine on it and Linksys makes a seperate power booster box (not sure if it is compatible) also they have a new series of High Gain antennas out. People have also been making hacked firmware. My friend just put firmware on his Linksys WAP54 and boosted the output from 20 mw to 80mw. Supposedly you can get up to a 300% gain in signal. But he backed it down to like 40mw because he said something about a certain component and heat buildup. He has a degree in electrical engineering so he knows his stuff.

I whole heartedly recommend the Linky WRT54GS, if you have any questions PM me.
