Need a new router I think

I have one of these: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16833124190 (maybe the G and not the GL, not sure). I've had it for a while and recently I've been getting some crappy internet speeds. I'm directly plugged into it and it's directly plugged into my modem. I just had the modem replaced. Everything has been power cycled/reset several times. I tried different cables and different ports. I'm 99% sure it's the router because I'm getting much faster up/down speeds and pings on speed test websites (including my host's direct site, which has no additional jumps) when I plug directly into the modem, but as soon as I connect through my router my speeds tank, sometimes by as much as 50% or worse. I haven't made any changes to any settings recently and I think it might just be dying after all these years.

So ...

1) Anything else I can/should to do troubleshoot it? The tech and I agreed it was probably something with the router because speeds are fine when directly hooked up to the modem.

2) If I need a new router, which should I get? I do use wireless G. Don't have anything with N yet, but not sure if I should go ahead and can get an N-capable router anyway.

TIA!

Try flashing opensource firmware like DD-WRT or Tomato. You can even flash/re-flash newer linksys firmware. Sometimes a reflash will "refresh" a router.

Also after you flash, reset the router to defaults by holding that button on the back with a pin for like 30 seconds while the router is plugged in I think. Then power-cycle it (unplug/plug back in).

Here's something else I noticed ... I have a pretty good connection to my host, but whenever I'm downloading something, even if it's going at only 200k, if I run a "ping yahoo.com -t" my latency goes from ~100ms to 3000+ms (with timeouts) and internet becomes almost unusable. There's no way a 200k download is causing this. WTF is going on with my internet.
