Hey Guys,

In about a year I will be off to college. I would like to build a new rig that would last throughout college and maybe longer. I am not looking something TOO extreme like a gamer or anything, but I usually play Counter-Strike:Source once in a while, and I do a lot of web designing, etc.

I am planning to spend a good $500-600 for the new computer. I already have an LCD monitor.

Here are the following items I am looking at purchasing:

Computer Case(ATX Mid Tower - Black): ?
Motherboard: ?
CPU Processor: ?
Video Card: ?
Harddrive(120GB): ?
DVD Burner: ?
DVD Drive: ?
Memory(1GB): ?
Heatsink & Fan: ?

Any help would be appreciated! Thanks!

Build the computer WHEN you go to college. In a year, it's gonna be quite outdated.
And if you can, shell out $800-1000 for the box only, that will get you a computer that can be reasonably expected to last 4 years, and even then you'll need to do some upgrades to play games.

If you are on a dead $600 limit, buying a Dell with good CPU, adding video card and RAM would make more sense than building. You want to build when you have >=$800 budget.
$600, I say Dell + upgrades.

definitely wait until you are close to going before building, then ask again and take a look at buyers guides, here and if sharkyextreme is still doing them. A $600 machine built now is not going to be particularly capable in 4 years let alone 5 so try to save a little more (allow for upgrades every couple of years).

Thanks, i'll take that in consideration. For now, I guess i'll just have to stick with what i've got. I'll do a little bit researching and will post any further questions, thanks again.
