er, its a model 774e, but hp.com doesnt have the right picture for it.

it looks like this http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v214/andrewp77/hp2.jpg

anyway, ive tried replacing these powersupplies in the past with ones from retail stores, and they were always too small or too big. there is no way im buying one from hp directly

the problem is that the current supply cant seem to handle any newer video cards without shutting down. what i need to know is what kind of power supply im looking for, and better yet, who makes the best power supplies in this form factor? i want something with at least the reliability of an antec, but i dont think they make anything in this size :(

right thats great thanks but

i said i didnt want to buy from hp. for many reasons. some of which partsurfer demonstrates. first being they only offer the exact same powersupply that is in there now. i need something better than the current 200w output

I'm sorry but can you take an actual photo of the power supply unit? Maybe then I or someone else can guide you to some place that sells other PSUs that could fit into that case. 9/10 times HP uses a proprietary PSU unit. However I know CompUSA sells the same PSU that HP uses but its CompUSA branded.

i think i found what i needed at newegg by searching for powersupplies under manufacturer HiPro (they make the 200w currently in the HP). unfortunately newegg doesnt seem to give me dimensions, but they look the right size... :(

Why don't you just spend 20 bucks more and get a decent case with a bigger psu and migrate the parts. I always do that with gateway and dell etc.

well, that tells us a couple of things

for one its a "HV, PFC, Bestec ATX-1956F"
HP charges $80 for it
HAHAHAHA. wow.

well, taking that easily found info. we easily find its specs. easily. here

so you need a MicroATX PS3 PSU. They do have a 250w version.

But all in all, I was going to suggest the same thing as tiap. If you want a decent cheap case, suggestion. As for PSU (for new case), do you want something that will work, is quality build, but cheap? suggestion

i happen to like the small cramped hp case :) besides i dont like having empty cases lying around, id have to build a whole new computer :p

also im not sure that it qualifies as microATX i think it might be something more proprietary

for example those hipros at newegg wont do it. i found the size im looking for is 150mm x 100mm x 85mm. the microATX seems to be smaller than that. the ones at newegg seem to be 140 x 150 x 86. although i could be confused on that point...

looking at ebay now :)

There are lots of cases available in lots of sizes. I would think that the primary goal would be to get away from a proprietary overpriced, underpowered, poor quality psu.
Bottom line is:
Small space+poor quality+marginal power+poor ventilation=abnormal heat+premature failure.

Gateway, Dell, Compaq, HP, emachines are well known for this in their lower priced lines.
Just be aware

Shuttle has had their problems way back, but apparantly a lot of people are very satisfied these days.
If you like that style check this Antec Aria since you also mentioned you liked Antec power supplies. I'm impressed.
