Need a New Mouse

I currently have a basic Microsoft optical mouses and i thas served me well until recently, when it became finicky and unresponsive.

Now it had broke and I'm back to using a broken-down Dell trackball until I can get a better mouse.

What do you guys suggest? I do work in Photoshop and Illustrator where precison counts. I don't game nearly as much as I used to, so I really don't need anything high end.

Just a note, I would like to get a mouse around $40.

Don't be an ass, you have no right calling him a noob. You joined at about the same time, yet he as 1000+ more posts than you do. Also, I'm assuming the "official mouse and joystick thread" you are referring to is this thread posted by you, it's the only thread I could find about the topic. It's just a thread with a poll of what mice and joysticks people want and use, it doesn't help him decide which mouse meets his needs. Maybe if you made a useful guide like the LCD buyer's guide , he wouldn't need to make this thread and have you crap on it.



As for the mouse recommendation, I would say anything in Logitech's MX series would suit you. You need to consider if you want a wireless or wired mouse. I like wired mice because of their lower weight and because they don't need to be charged or anything. I never move my mouse away from my desk, so the cord doesn't bother me, also my mousepad has a clip that keeps the cord in place. Some of their higher end mice might be out of your pricerange like the G7 or MX1000, so I'd probably go with something like the MX518/510, G5 (if you can find one cheap), or the MX610 (cordless) depending on which one you like better based on the feel of the mouse and features.
 
The Logitech MX518 is what I've been using for around 4-5 months now and I'm really pleased with it. I'm not a regular Photoshop user, but I did have a small problem keeping it steady while doing precise work. It could've been due to the mouse not tracking correctly on my mousepad or my inexperience using Photoshop. You probably wouldn't have any problems with it since you use Photoshop more than I do.

If your doing photoshop your going to need something "high end", imo you need something with at least 1600dpi. G5 is a nice choice if you like a firm palm grip, if not go for the razer copperhead instead for a more standard mouse feel.

I just talked to my sister who is a graphic designer who uses Photoshop all the time, she uses a MX500 at work and a MX1000 at home. She said that there really isn't much of a difference between the two bsides the feel and the sensitivity. She says that she can't tell a difference between the precision of each. It might be different for you though if you're not using a very good mousing surface or if you're more sensitive to how well your mouse moves.
 
Well, here are your options for around $40-50:
Razer Diamondback
Logitech G5
Logitech MX518

If you really don't need all that, you can try:
MX500
Optorite Lazer Mouse (great mouse)
MX310

Norm
 
MX518 is really comfy, i tried it at BestBuy and liked it a bunch. of course, the G5 was still better, but at the price BB was offering it there was no way I could've pulled the trigger.
If you're on a budget the MX510 is still a quality mouse, besides being old.
