Need a new mobo for an old proc

Well my sis killed her Asus A7V and now I need a new cheap stable mobo (doesn't need to have oc capabilities) for her 900mhz TBird socket A. As I have not looked at socket A mobos since the purchase whats a mobo that fits those criterias? Also whats a good quiet HSF for the mobo?

There are lot's of choices, and most of them are backward compatible. The main sticking point is going to be the RAM. You currently have SDRAM if that's the board I'm thinking of. Most of the best boards currently available use DDR only. So, you might want to consider a more comprehensive upgrade. If you really want to upgrade just the board, and keep everything else, then something like the K7S5A would allow you to do so. It actually has both SDRAM and DDR slots, so you could potentially upgrade to a faster processor and DDR memory in the future. However, that board can be a bit flaky if the P/S isn't up to snuff. So, you might need an upgrade there too.

Nope never gonna upgrade this machine. Just looking for something to replace the dead board so it doesn't matter if it has ddr or not. Any other ones you have in mind? 🙂

K7S5A Pro is $52, not gonna get too much cheaper than that. 🙂

I saw one of these in the Frys ad this weekend for $69 with an Athlon XP 1800+. For the extra $17 you can double her processor speed, then sell the old chip on eBay to make your $17 back. See the thread HERE.
