It appears my 30 year old heat pump is in its final days and needs to replaced.

The system is currently mismatched and I have one option to just replaced the heatpump. A goodman r-22 unit, but I have heard mixed reviews on the reliability of that brand.

If I want better equipment I will need to replace everything, any recommendations on equipment for a complete new system?

Why would you want to keep any part of a 30 year old system? My unit is 14 years old and I have seriously considered replacing it all for a new unit. Just because it would be much quieter, less likely to break down, much much more energy efficient.

R-22 has been phase out since 2009, but manufacture are allow to sell existing inventory (up to 5 ton units) until it run out. However, most if not all Asian countries are still using and manufacturing R-22 equipment and refrigerant (namely Dupont), hence unscrupulous HVAC companies install/import R-22 cheap equipment/refrigerant under disguise of "existing inventory".

Go ahead and get it, if you are okay with the fact that you will not be able to get R-22 refrigerant for the heat pump, because of crack down on illegal refrigerant import.

IMHO, Goodman is just as good as any other name brand, such as Carrier, York, Trane, LG, Lenox, etc.... It all come down to the handling and installation of the unit. The unit will perform well if the tech is knowledgeable, and may not perform well if a rookie or shady company install it.

It doesn't matter what brand you install. What more important is that the installer are well trained/professional, and the availability of parts & refrigerant (R-410a).

Outside unit is original equipment. Inside air handler is about 15 years old and will match with one of goodmans new heat pumps. And apparently it is far easier to match a new air handler with a new heat pump down the road if that needs replacing.

So there apparently there been a increase in goodman quality over the past 10 years or so...and that can only be attributed to installer quality. Having a good installer is on thing, saying all brands have equal quality is another.
