Need a new hard drive

I currently have a Seagate 320GB 7200.10 and it's virtually silent, well compared to my old ones and such. Anyways I am running out of space and have considered maybe getting a new hard drive. I was considering a Seagate 500GB 7200.10 but I have read that it is much louder than the 320GB, which concerns me because I don't want to hear a hard drive grinding away. It's also around 60 bucks more for only 180 GBs.

Should I stick with 320GB drives because of its price per GB and quiet or would going up to 500GB be worth it even if it's louder and more expensive?

I have the 400gb and the 500gb 7200.10 drives and the 400 is louder than the 500. Dont know how either compares to the 320.

Thanks, I'll consider those Samsungs, haven't used them before.

I was impressed with the Seagate, so I was thinking about going with them, but definately gives me more choices. However, can anyone comment on the Seagate 500GB vs. the 320GB and compare noise?

The quietest ones seem to be the WD5000KS or the WD5000YS (raid edition) drives. Barely audible!

Alternatively, check out the Hitachi Deskstar T7K500 - another very quiet and just as good (or a tad bit better) performer compared to the WD drives.

As a silence + HTPC fan, I'm going to pick up one of these for my upcoming mATX build.

Seagate consistently win awards for low noise + high speed. Ive predominantly used seagates for 11 years now, i havent got a single complaint about them, bloody fast, bloody quiet, bloody good warranty. 🙂

Hmm I guess ultimately my question comes down to: 2x 320GB Seagate drives or 1x Samsung 500GB drive. Decisions decisions.
