I'm looking to replace my m6805 with something a little better. I need it to have a DVD writer and at least equivalent performance to my current setup, for under $1350 to my door in Atlanta. The reason I picked that number is because that is roughly how much the gateway 7422gx is running at bestbuy after tax. The Gateway has an A64 3400+, 1 gb ram, 80gb hd, ATI 9550 (basically a 9600) with 64mb ram, DL dvd writer, and 15.4" widescreen. I'm about to click and order one, so if anyone can find me something better for the same price, please reply ASAP.

Thanks in Advance,
Kenan

thought about the Dell 9200? It has a better video card, ATI9700 w/128MB. I'm playing Call of Duty on mine right now and it kicks butt! I've got a P-M 1.8Ghz and 1.25GB of RAM. It originally came with 512MB but I took one of the 256MB modules out and replaced it with a 1GB module I just bought. The price to my door was $1500 though. You can bump the processor down a bit to get it at $1300.

The Gateway 7422GX is your Best Bang for the Buck notebook for $1249 at Bestbuy this week. The ultra-brite screen is gorgeous.

The 9200 doesn't have an A64 IIRC, and that will greatly improve gaming performance. Just OC the 9550 to 9700 speeds

Thanks guys, just picked up a 7422gx and it's great! Speed improvement over my m6805 isn't that big, but the screen is a big improvement. It's not that the Emachines had a bad screen, it's that this one is fantastic.

Awesome! Glad you enjoy it. I didn't notice that you had a 6805, guess the 7422 isn't TOO much of an upgrade in terms of performance ;) Make sure you drop it the Omega drivers for your 9550, those should REALLY help unlock some power
And if you get bored, OC the crap out of that lil' ATI card ;)

I ghosted an image of my m6805 onto the 7422gx, and it works perfectly (had to reactivate Xp of course). Also, the video card from what I can tell is identical to the m6805. It has the same clock speed ratings (296 mhz core 198 mhz mem) overclocked them to 375 core 220 mem and haven't had any problems as yet. Thanks for the quick replies everyone who helped out.

sweet, congrats on your new laptop! And just out of curiosity, how much faster is the A64 over the P-M?

Gaming wise, they're equivalent clock for clock. It's just that the A64 has a big advantage as far as other memory intensive tasks (on die controller) as well as multi-tasking. It also has support for 64-bit windows which (if it EVER gets released) should show a noticeable boost in performance in aforementioned tasks. Keep in mind that the P-M is essentially an optimized P3 core. So it comes with all the advantages, as well as some of the drawbacks. But if battery life is concerned, P-M by far.

Well said!
In game testing though, it looks like the Dothan P-M gains about 200MHz over the A64.
So a 1.8GHz P-M equals a 2GHz clocked A64 (3200+?)
