What's good these days? I'm too poor to afford a real trip over spring break this year so I thought I might pick up some new game, wallop it, and spend my break doing that. Anyone have suggestions?

i've just played through Secret Weapons Over Normandy and that was pretty good (hard).

You might be interested in deus ex 2 but it's not really a killer game, just a timewaster

PRINCE OF PERSIA: SANDS OF TIME!!

One of the best games in a long long long time but completely tanked at retail for some unknown reason.

Beyond Good and Evil is also a very good game and was dropped in price to $20 for yet another unknown reason.

I am starting to think that the general population does not like a good original game and prefers crap.

Oh well... loss for everyone.. games are just going to get worse and worse.

I'll second that. Played them and I loved both. I suggest those two and Star Wars: Knights of THe Republic.

I'm waiting for Pirates! That looks like it's going to be a great game.

I'd recommend Dungeon Master II, if you can find a computer that'll run it.

Here is a list of ones I loved that should be 'cheap' now as well:

Dungeon Siege
Morrowind
Wizardry 8

And IMHO the best 1st person now is Call of Duty (New Egg has it for 29$ free shipping)

Best RTS I've played:
Rise of Nations

Great game that doesn't get the credit it deserves. It was a blast to play and I especially loved the large scale puzzles and jumps.

Knights of The Old Republic, Rise of Nations and Mafia off the top of my head if you haven't played through any of them. KoTOR is still a $50 game, but RoN I believe is now around $20 and you can pick up Mafia for $10 at Wal-Mart now. Those are three of the best to come out in the last couple of years.

I played through Tron recently and thought that was pretty good too, picked that up at EB for $20(money well spent). Also I agree with the PoP and BG&E comments but they should be console pick ups IMO(actually not sure if BG&E is available on the PC- but it is certainly the type that should be played on a console).

Bought Tron 2.0 because I've always been a big Tron fan, normal skill level took about 7 hours to beat, a little less than I'd hoped but I'm not complaining, I really enjoyed it. Neat game. I think I might pick up KOTOR, or Prince of Persia: Sands of Time(my roomie has it on gamecube and it looked pretty neat while I watched him .. but what about on a desktop system? Controller issues? I could probably use one of my PS2 like clone USB controllers if keyboard/mouse would be clumsy.) Although, after playing quite a few FPS or even FPS/RPG hybrids I might sit back a bit and wait for a solid RPG to come out. Thanks for you all your suggestions, I've got a list to watch for. :)

Now if only Deus Ex 2 didn't choke my 128mb GeForce FX 5600 (yea.. I'l be upgrading to an ATI 9800 Pro/XT come summer I think) I'd play through that considering I've had it since the day it came out and never played more than 5 mins.

Hated PoP:ST.....it' jumping puzzles punctuated by fighting off armies of enemy thrown at you. And you're at the mercy of an oftentimes funky third person camera. Seems from the opinions I've read you either love it (most do) or hate it....I'm in the latter catagory. If you don't mind jumping and reloading alot, you may like this.

With regard to RPGs, KOTOR and Gothic 2 are both excellent. FPSs.....UT2004 if you can wait till next week. I've had enough of the WW2 shooting clones so I won't comment on those. RTS.....Rise of Nations is excellent. Turned base strategy.....Galactic Civilizations or the venerable Alpha Centauri.

KoTOR is the best RPG I've played in a very long time, if not ever.

It should be a console only title, I'm not sure why they have it on the PC honestly. The control mechanics are the type that need to be carefully sorted out on a fixed controller. Plays very nice on the Box.
