They are pretty much all the same. Just get whichever Samsung, Sony, NEC, LG, etc. that is on sale for $20 at the 'egg.

They are pretty much all different.

If you like something loud, or you want to drown out the noise of those low-flying airliners over your house, go with a Lite-On.

I like NEC, I have both the 3500A/G and 3530A. But if you want one, I think NEC only came out with one or two SATA models before they got out of the DVD burner business...most of their legendary drives were PATA.

If you don't mind not knowing which company designed and manufactured the drive, go with a Sony or Plextor.

Samsung spent a lot of time on MaxPC's BOTB over the last few years. I have a quiet S223Q that's still rockin' after hundreds of rips and burns.

They have all had their hits and misses. For instance one of the latest Samsung models have a LOT of really bad reviews on Newegg, probably from a bad batch. LG for a while put "Bluebird" in the firmware of their drives which is some built-in basic burning software... which also was adware!

Still, for the most part I use those two brands. For me DVD burners are commodities, so I buy whichever is cheapest (except no LiteOn).

Yeah, I have two older 16x NEC burners of the 3500 variety but need a new one for my gaming rig and figured I'd go sata. I'm tired of the liteon jet engine I currently have which will go into a rebuild I'm doing. Thanks for the info folks.
