just put together a nice phenom 955 quad core machine on a gigabyte 770TA mobo.

the stock heatsink fan is way too loud for me.

can someone recommend a nice replacement?

my requirements in order are:
1) as quiet as possible
2) as cool as possible given condition #1

that's it.

Not too concerned with looks or size. I currently don't have any lights & my case is coolermaster scout, so I should have plenty of room

Price isn't that big of a deal, but would like to keep at < $50 or so shipped.

how about ease of installation? i would really like not having to remove the mobo to install

It's tough to find good coolers without a backplate, but there are options. Honestly, it's worth your time. Are you overclocking? Otherwise you can probably find a cheap replacement (~$20?).

actually, i was just thinking and confirmed my suspicions - the case's mobo tray has a cutout behind the cpu allowing easier installation of a backplate.

another thing, I was looking at the Scythe Mugen 2, but I only find AM2 compatibility.. will it work with an AM3?
