Need a new car, 5 minutes to make a decision

2000 Toyota Camry LE
63,000 miles
GOOD dealer (My entire family buys from him)
Dealer knew the owner of the car personally
Garage Kept
Single Owner
New Tires
New Timing Belt
New Oil Change
No Dings
No accidents

Cost: $8400 plus appropriate taxes, total of $9300.

Dealer bought car for $7400 from owner (he showed us the papers).

OK..... so the question is....

Get it? Or don't get it?

Situation: person needs a car. Existing car has no muffler.

I never make a rush decision to buy a major purchase. Spend a few hundred to fix the muffler and then take your time finding the right car.

Also, that Camry seems a little pricy to me.

Get a muffler

Seriously... tell dealer you will pay $7600 for it, he still makes a quick 200 🙂

Ask the dealer how much he charged the previous owner for their new car. I've heard that dealers inflate both the new price and the trade in price for some reason.

While it does sound like a pretty good deal, kbb says around $9800 retail, I have to agree with those who say not to rush into anything just because the other car needs a muffler. If you've already been looking for a while and this is the car you want though, it's a decent deal.

What? No little old lady from Pasadena?

Dude, they say that about ever car on their lot...

Why do you need to decide in 5 minutes? Take some time and think about a car purchase. I'm very confident that you could find better cars for $8400 than that.

shens on the dealer paying $7499 for the car except it's a trade in for a new car with no discounts.

No kidding, they probably paid $5k for it...$6k max.

OP is leaving a lot of information out too. Is this a V6 model? Alloy wheels or steel wheels with hubcaps? Sunroof? What options does it have? How are the tires? Lots of tread left? Marginal tread left?

I wouldn't purchase a used car without running a carfax report on it. I wouldn't be surprised if it was a fleet vehicle at one time.

According to Kelly Blue Book, (not completely accurate, but a good starting point) the car with a 4 cyl. engine and auto transmission in EXCELLENT condition is worth about $9800. MAX retail from a dealer, and from a private party, it's value would be between $7400 and $8K. depending on condition...Trade-in value ranges between $5000 and $6350.
I find it hard to believe they actually gave that much in trade, UNLESS they padded the other end of the deal pretty heavily.

Edit: forgot to add the 6 cyl values.
MAX retail $10,600
private party $7300-$8700

I still doubt they gave that much in trade, unless like I said above, they padded the other end of the deal...
