need a msn messenger alternative

Maybe Gaim? Only one other than trillian I'm familiar with. You could always do a search on sourceforge.net. Usually a lot of messenger programs under development there.

Another program will most likely not work for you. Yes, many can connect to the MSN network, however they are all using the same port which is what is most likely being blocked at the firewall level

With gaim you can tell it to use HTTP instead of the port it normall uses. But they can still see that it is msn traffic and they will know.

I'd suggest running ssh at home and they using ssh to connect into your home machine and tunneling msn though it.
