I don't know what is up, but i must be having terrible luck with these P35s. Both of the ones I bought (ABIT IP35 Pro 775, GIGABYTE GA-P35-DS3L) have had faulty onboard sound. A pretty nasty static interference in the background (Front panel and rear).

It goes down to a more tolerable level if i unplug the front panel USBs, but i'm spending the money, why should I have to deal with this?

Anyway, i've decided to take advantage of newegg's RMA service and get a THIRD board for this system.

E6750
EVGA 8800GT (512mb)
4x2g G.Skill DDR2 800
FSP Group 450w

I don't think I will use SLI, but at this point, who cares. I just want a solid board that works. I can handle some tweaking and advanced overclocking features are OK, not a priority.

How about a 680i or 650i?
Do any of the new boards just use AC'97 audio?

both 650i and 680i are fine IMO...P35 is just better chipset, but that does NOT render 650/680i useless.

Don't know if any/which new boards use AC97.

I would suggest that if you experienced the exact same front panel & rear audio problems with both boards, then the cause is something other than the board. Perhaps one of those USB devices you mentioned is causing interference. Are you using shielded audio cables? If not, that could cause trouble.

Personally, I have never, ever found onboard audio that worked to my liking. Even if it really is the board that's faulty (or, perhaps more accurately, just poor quality), I think you'd still be better off just buying a used $10 SoundBlaster than spending the same amount to ship back the board. In my experience, even cheap-o dedicated audio cards are infinitely preferable to onboard sound, especially if you're talking about A>D.

I hope that helps. If not, good luck finding a solution!

Borrow a sound card (any sound card), and see if you still hate the P35 MBs. :p

I honestly would be perfectly willing to accept that. But I have a fear that if the onboard sound is bad, that something else might go.

i dunno. If I am gonna use a sound card I may as well switch back to the ABIT

Have you tried unplugging the front panel AUDIO? Most cases are still wired for AC'97, while the P35 has HD Audio, which is a wee bit different wiring. That may be the cause of your problems.

the front panel audio IS AC97 but you can configure the software to make it work.

I have unplugged everything unpluggable to try to make this go away. Nothing works.

That's awkward; I believe I have the same Gigabyte P35 board and I have no problem using the on-board sound. The fact that you're getting it with two separate boards makes me think it's something else as well. Unless this is some widely known issue with the P35's that I don't know about....

Not to my knowledge it's not.

I'm inclined to think there's something else at play here, but hey, everybody is unlucky once in a while.

Everything i know tells me it should be something else too. I just can't figure out what it would be.

I've went as far as completely unplugging everything but needed power connections, HD and 1 stick of memory. It's still there. It's there in both XP32 and Vista 64. It's there using both the drivers that came with the mobo and the newest from the site.
