What do I need to be able to play windows media files and quicktime movies etc, becuase the totem player thing does work.

Man, it's like just a day or two ago we had a thread on this. 😕

vlc
mplayer

It doesn't really matter as long as you have the right codecs and the players will use those codecs.

Is there one that just installs instead of going through terminal and crap?

Use the tools that come with your distro. Their package management will be your best bet.

BTW, the terminal is where all the real work happens, get used to seeing it. 🙂

Am I going to need an encoder to play them still?

Yes, just like in Windows, on Mac OS X, or in your favorite BSD.
