I need a low budget card that will run HL2 good but also play say newer gaming coming in the next year or so. I don't run 1600x ref or FSAA and crap like that. I just want to run 1024x768(maybe even 1280x) with max detail.

Is there any out now thats fairly cheap or should I maybe wait a while longer. Nvidia or ATI is fine but prefer ATI.

I'd say 9800 pro or 6600gt for a budget card that will play hl2 decently, but if you want something more future proof go with the 6600gt.

Go to the main AT website and read the HL2 and nv 6600 GT reviews. The 6600GT looks like the sweet spot on price/performance for 1024x768 gaming. The AGP version is just starting to ship, so right now you'll pay $230-250 instead of the $200 you'll pay in (hopefully) about a month from now.

In what world is a $200 video card a budget card?

You're probably going to have to go with Nvidia this time around.

The X800 Pro will run around $400.

The X700 is a little cheaper, but not that great.

The X600 can be had for under $200, but it flat out sucks - basically a 9600xt.

A 6600GT < $200 or a 6800NU ~ $250 seems the best choice.

In what world can less than $200 allow you to run 1024x768(maybe even 1280x) with max detail in HL2

In what world do "budget card" and "future proof" belong together? Or "budget card" and "HL2 max detail"? :p

an equally valid question...

In the world of purchasing they talk about three things: cheap, fast, good

Pick 2

You want a cheap card now? don't expect a good one.

You want a cheap fast card? buy a x800 Pro in two years

You want a fast card now? $200 doesn't get you there...

The gaming world. You want to play new games you have to spend money.

It's simple. Games push PC hardware.

Not Microsoft Word.
