Hi.

I have a D-Link DSM-G600 NAS box with a built-in wireless AP/Client. I also purchased used a D-Link DWL-900AP access point. It is only an 11MB/s router, but this thing will eventually be used ONLY for internet access, so speed is not a problem.

Here is my setup.

192.168.1.1 - Linksys BEFSR41 router
|
| cable connection
|
192.168.1.2 - D-Link DSM-G600 Network Storage and Access Point

/ wireless connection

/
192.168.1.3 - D-Link DWL-900 AP (in client mode)
|
| cable connection through hub (I do not have a crossover cable)
|
192.168.1.65 - Computer

From a PC connected directly to the BEFSR41, I can ping the DWL. The wireless connection works. The NAS box even reports the connection on its configuration screen.

From the PC at 192.168.1.65, I can ping the DWL. The wired connection to the DWL works. I can also run the management utility perfectly from this PC.

From the router side, I cannot ping 192.168.1.65 (the PC). Note that there is no firewall on this PC right now.

From 192.168.1.65 (the PC) I cannot ping either the NAS box or the router.

Everything SHOULD be working, but it is not. I have all encryption turned off right now.

Any ideas?

I am Not familiar with the DSM-G600.

I have one installation that consist of WRT54G and a DWL-900AP with 8dbi Omni Antenna in client Mode. It is sitting 60? away through two walls and outside brush, and I get about 7Mb/sec. of traffic through it. The 900 AP is plugged into a Hub that feeds two computers, it works very well.

Might be that your problem stems from IPs and DHCP issues. I did this installation a while ago and I remember having some troubles at the beginning, but I do not remember the details.

Right Now the DHCP of the WRT54G is set to On, serving IPs 192.168.1.10 to 192.168.1.20. The 900AP is in client mode DHCP is Off and it is configured with a static IP of 192.168.1.100. All the computers on the network are drawing their IPs from the WRT54G, even the ones past the AP900.

If you are using MAC Filtering the computers past the 900AP are considered Wireless and have to be put in the Wireless MAC table.

Sharing is On, as well as Software Firewalls etc. and it works well.

Did you have to do anything special to your PCs to get them to work over the wireless link?

DHCP even works over the wireless?

I am beginning to think that either one of my bits of hardware is defective, or that they are not compatible for some reason.

As I said, my access point is at a static IP of 192.168.1.3. I can ping it from BOTH SIDES of the wireless link. So the link is there. I just cannot get any actual traffic over the link.

Any other ideas?

There are 6 Desktops on this Network and None of them is Wireless. These computers are garden variety of Intel, NVIDA chipset. Two Win 2000, and 4 WinXP Pro, normally configured. The Wireless is used for the Bridging and Laptops logon.

It worked for a year with a Buffalo 802.11g as the source. Few months ago, I changed to WRT54G flashed with HyperWRT21 so that I can get more RF power.

The setting works as is with either Wireless Router (Buffalo, or WRT) and the computers. I did not even touched the 900AP+ when I did these changes.

So while every thing is possible when it come to technology, I doubt that it has to do with a specific computer.

At this point if it was my system I would first try another Wireless source replacing temporarily the D-Link DSM-G600

Make sure that the 900AP is not in B+ (22Mb/sec.) mode.
