ok first off about ram. i dont know what speed to choose but im think ddr2 1066. but i dont know if i can run this actually at 1066. im getting a q6700 which fsb is 1066 and my mobo is the p5q pro. so would i be able to run at 1066 or should i go with 800 or 1000? also if i can run at 1066 i would be getting the Corsair dominator which needs 2.1v but the mobo i think is set to 1.2v to reduce heat. could i change this and if doing so would it can instabilty?

as for the harddrive im getting the samsung spingpoint 1tb. its sata, and the psu im getting is the corsair 550vx. my main question is since the hdd does not come with any cables is there any cables that i would need to buy for this?

thanks for replys!!!!!!

LOL. Read the f'in manual. To put it nicely, since the HDD is OEM, you would need the extra sata cables, but the motherboard usually comes with some sata cables so don't worry about it. I think you should go with either DDR2-800 memory and overclock it or to be more safe, go with the DDR2-800.

Ok. Basically:
Quoted FSB speed = real speed x4
Quoted DDR2 speed = real speed x2

Without overclocking, the Q6700 runs at 1066 FSB (1044/4 = 266MHz real speed). DDR2 that works with this must therefore run at 266x2 = DDR2-533. Any DDR2 faster than that will just run at DDR2-533 anyway, unless you raise the FSB to overclock in which case faster DDR2 gives you headroom for increasing the FSB.

In essence, DDR2-800 will correspond to an overclocked FSB of 400MHz and therefore DDR2-800 is more than enough for a generous overclock of that CPU. So, buy that and not more expensive "faster" RAM.

That motherboard doesn't run DDR2 at 1.2v, no motherboard anywhere does. Just stick in the RAM, as soon as you boot it up go into BIOS and change the DDR2 voltage (vDIMM probably) to "+0.3" or "2.1v", because the standard voltage is 1.8v.

That hard drive comparatively isn't a great performer these days, get yourself the Western Digital Caviar Black 1TB instead.

As always, Roguestar hits the nail rather bluntly on the head :D

But, you can actually run your RAM higher than the 2 * the CPU speed by manually setting a divider ratio higher than 1:1. In other words, your RAM at 1:1 is at 533, but by running a 5:4 ratio you can set it to 667, or use a 3:2 ratio to run it at 800. Not sure that the higher RAM speed is worth the extra load on your northbridge, but if you're really intent on pushing things to the max, you've got that option

If you want to leave FSB speeds at normal and not overclock your CPU, there is indeed the option of having your motherboard run your memory at a higher ratio and thus a certain fraction faster than the default lowest speed. Unfortunately the performance gains between 1:1 and a higher ratio are non-existent on Intel Core 2 CPUs and motherboards, and this requires setting in the BIOS which most people who are unwilling to overclock will hesitate to change. You are nonetheless correct in pointing it out! ;)

thanks for everyones reply. but i stll need a little more info. i DO NOT want to overclock. my cpu supports ddr2 1200 with fsb of 1333 and 1600. im going to be using the q9450. which has a fsb of 1333. so with that at hand what ram should i get? ddr2 800? ddr2 1066?? thank for replys!!!

DDR2-800 has more than enough headroom if you're not overclocking and is at a pretty sweet price spot.
