Need a little help..

I've noticed two or three crunchers P4 3GHz HT isn't finishing wu in the time they're supposed to. They used to do 15+ wu a day with under 3hr avrg/wu, now they do half of that. I've checked and the 2 seti processes uses 50% cpu each and nothing other than seti is using the cpu. Any ideas? 🙁

How about temps? Don't P4s decrease MHz/FSB (don't know which one) when they get too hot?

I guess you've already checked on stuff like new background processes, virus, spyware, ... ?

🙂

Thanx Chris, yeah I checked for other processes, but all is fine.

I wasn't aware about the temps decreasing the speed on these p4s.. that might be the problem then. I did check the temps a while ago.. but I can't remember what they were. How hot are they supposed to go before they decrease the speed?

Edit.. OK after reading the article here: http://www.xbitlabs.com/articles/cpu/display/p4-temp.html I think the temp might be the problem, I'll check it out during the day..

Are those prescotts or northwoods? I doubt a northwood would get hot enough to throttle, but a prescott definately could. Depends on how much dust you've got inside the system.

Mmm temp in in the 70s.. blown out the dust, still the same. I'll add some arctic silver after work..

I don't know if this one is a prescott or northwood. It's socket LGA... if that helps..

I don't know for sure, but 70°C is a pretty high temp for any CPU. Is it 70°C with 100% load? I mean, consider then that someone turns on the heating, room temp raises 4 degrees and those 70 will reach 80 in no time.

Sounds like your HSF is not up to the task of cooling the processor. Artic Silver might make a difference, but it shouldn't make up the kind of difference where a processor goes from 70c to a reasonable level. I suspect that after it is applied you will see some difference, but I would be shocked if it were more than 4c.

Indeed, sounds more like a HS that just doesn't do the job or somehow lost its contact to the CPU surface. Johan, did you check if the HS is still seated properly? Did anyone move these PCs recently?

I remember in one of my old jobs one computer had the same problem, getting worse and worse. It took us a few weeks to find out that the woman who was cleaning the office just wasn't very careful with her vacuum cleaner. She just rambled against the PC case with such a force that the HS moved!

mmm Well the main problem is that it's summer here.. and with temps getting somewhere in the high 30s and mid 40 degrees celcius outside, it's hot everywhere. All the offices at work have air conditioning, so that helps a lot! I added some artic silver, oh and the hs was sitting nicely on the cpu.. it's a standard hsf and this one is a socket 478, the other one is a socket lga..

I'll go and check on the temp again tomorrow as I was in a bit of a hurry.. Oh and thanx for the link Mike! 😀
