Set up an old school box for my 8 year old to play some games on. MSi 815-E board, p3 1.2, VooDoo 5500, Soundblaster Live 5.1, Win98SE, etc.

I have loaded lots of games and they all run great except I get no sound in Quake/QuakeII. Seems like I remember needing to do something to get sound from the card in these games but I can't remember what the hell it is.

Anyone remember ?

Thanks........

Quake 1 will need the DOS drivers(I believe), but Quake 2 shouldn't(I think). Sorry for being so vague, it's been awhile. :)

When quake1 starts up it will tell you in the console if the sound subsystem has started, check to see what it says.
Also turn your volume to max in the options.

WinQuake or any of the OpenGL versions of Quake will use DirectX for sound so you shouldn't have any problems with it. The same goes for Quake II.

Sound in QII is fixed. QI tells me the "Blaster environment is not set".

from the READ Me........"Audio Setup
-----------
When using a Sound Card with Quake, there are a few setup steps which must
be taken. First, the "BLASTER" environment variable setting must be in your
AUTOEXEC.BAT (or you can type it in manually from the MS-DOS command prompt).
Running the Sound Blaster utility DIAGNOSE.EXE will automatically configure
your sound card and put this statement in your AUTOEXEC.BAT file for you.
A typical blaster setting looks like this (although yours may vary):

SET BLASTER=A220 I5 D1 H5 P330 T6

Simple enough but Google didn't help me out with exactly what command to add for the 5.1 card. This thing is running to sweet to hose it just to play quake, but, I wanna hear the grenades bounce and the ogres roar.;)
