I want to build a new rig and trying to keep it in the $1000 area(monitor is not needed). I want to be able to play the newest games, also I have been wanting to try my hand at video-editing meaning record my game playing of World of Warcraft with FRAPs and editing it into something enjoyable to watch. My main question is I am not certain about dual cores and if while recording with FRAPs would I benefit from the dual core or not. I assume while encoding/burning/etc and browsing is where I would see the biggest benefit from the dual core.

Any advice would be helpful as most parts for the rig at the moment are up in the air, thanks ahead of time for the advice

I'm no expert, but i'm pretty sure it would benefit alot from dual core. One core doing the recording, one core doing the playing= no slowdowns.
I say go with the 3800 x2. It's sitting in my dining room, uninstalled right now. I'm hoping to put it in today or tomorrow though.

AMD Athlon 64 X2 3800
Motherboard = shrug, we'll work that out in a bit
7800GT
2 x 1GB PC 3200 RAM (any)
450W fortron

That's a very nice build, from there it can be adjusted to suit you exactly. For example you will be overclocking? Will you go SLI? Is noise an issue?

I have never overclocked anything before so I doubt it, and as far as SLI goes I think I will let the tech mature a little more before I take it up, and noise is not an issue. Thanks for all the quick replies

Ok, overclocking is much easier than it sounds, but it does make a difference to what we recomend. The DFI lanparty ultra is a top notch OC board, but it's rather fiddly otherwise, i'd think about gettitng the A8N E instead. Cheap, cheerful and not a bad board at all.

If you're not overclocking then there's no real reason to go for something more expensive than the fortron. If you're not going SLI then the 400W will be plenty.
