I have had my home network set up with all Win9X machines until recently when I changed my main computer over to 2000. This is my first time using 2k regularly, so I am still a bit unfamiliar.

Currently, I can access my other machines FROM my 2k machine, but can't access the 2k from my 9X machines...tells me I dont have permission. How can I fix this?

Also, can I get rid of the password log-on at the beginning? I know in 9X, I would just use the "Windows Family" log-on & all was good. What can I do in 2k?

3nd...and not a network question, but...how the heck can I add icons to my friggin task bar!?!?! In 9X, I can just drag & drop, but 2k says that I cannot put shortcuts there? Whats up with that?

BTW...using FAT 32 on my 2k machine.

ALSO....I don't want to create a just a shared folder...I want to have full access to all the drives on each of the machines. File & Print Sharing is enabled & I have given share permission to each of the drives I want to access.

1.) goto control panal to admin tools to comp mangement. then goto local users and groups to users. in other window, there is a red x by guest. rt-click on guest, select properties, and deselect disable acount, and close that window. after that you should get acsses

2.)go back to control panal. open users and passwords. deselect the top check box. that should get rid of the login screen

leme know if this works.
sory about grammer/sp, it it way late and I acnt sleep.:( TOO MUCH COFFEE AHHHHHHH!!:D

This is a pretty common problem. You are dealing with Permission issues. When windows 2000 is installed it has two accounts setup by default: the Administrator account, and the guest account. The guest account is automatically disabled. Basically when you try to access the Windows 2000 computer it checks to see who is trying to access it and compares that with the Users list. If it doesn't find it, and it won't if you haven't set it up, it then tries to hit the guest account (which of course is disabled).

The quick and dirty fix is to just enable the guest account. This, IMHO, is not a good solution. You should try to add the machine name for each computer that is going to be accessing your computer.

As far as the logon question, yes it is possible to have the computer not as you for a username and password at logon. You will be going to the same area for both of the questions so lets get going...

Log in as Administrator. Go to Start>Settings>Control Panel>Users and Passwords. For the answer to the second one you need to uncheck the "Users must enter a username and password to use this computer" checkbox. It will then ask you who it should assume is going to log on and you tell it whatever account you desire. As far as adding another user or users for the other computers on your network, just click on the Add button and the rest should be pretty self-explanitory. To enable your guest account, if you really really really want to, just click on the Advanced tab and click the Advanced button in the middle and you should get another window to open up. Double click on the users folder and then double click on the guest account. Uncheck the box marked Account is disabled and you should be set.

As far as the icons go, well, it sounds funny to me. I can drag and drop anything I desire. No problems.

Let us know how it goes and what problems you have, if any.

EDIT: Man, I type too slow. Somebody beat me to it.

Thanks...i knew it would be simple...just didnt know where to look.

I have NO idea what the deal is with the icons though.

I try to drag one to the taskbar & it says that you "Cannot place a shortcut there" & asks if i want to place it on the desktop instead.

sounds to me like the IE toolbar in the taskbar is somehow disabled. I'm not sure how to fix it, but i think that's the problem.

Right-click on taskbar, select Toolbars, then QuickLaunch. (I think that's the one you want)
