Need a little help on a printer.

Hi, my dad called me today and asked me a question about his printer that I couldn't answer, and so I am going to relay it to you guys. He has a HP, 1200 series (i believe its a 1260) laser printer, that is black and white. It is roughly a year old. Whenever he prints something now, the text looks normal, except in the middle of the page it fades out to nearly nothing and then comes back to full color. I believe it is length ways down the page. Imagine a word document that looks normal with a white strip straight down the middle. My question is, what is the cause of this? Could it be that it is low on ink? Is a part of the printer broken and it cannot write in this strip? He told me that sometimes the strip is a little to the left. Please help me, I would greatly appreciate it. Thanks in advance Anand Tech! =)

Tell him to take the cartridge out and shake it back and forth. The toner isn't distributed evenly. Probably running out of toner also.

Its a definitely a problem with the printer memory or lack of i should say. When printing heavy graphics you may encounter that type of problem since the image isn't completely buffered in the printer's memory. A way to reduce this is by

* getting the latest drivers for the printer and making sure you have the right ones
* adding more memory
* lowering the quality of the picture
* tweaking the printer spool settings so that it doesn't send the entire page to the printer (you may have to disable print spooling). just mess around with the settings

Memory problem for printing a word document? I don't think so. I say it's time to replace the toner.

I concur...Time for a new toner cartridge. Taking it out at shaking it a bit side to side may buy some time, but not much.

LOL. You've reminded me of my college days when I was dirt poor and couldn't afford to get a new toner cartridge. It was at a time when the school's computer lab was closed (and it was snowing alot so I was too lazy to go to a 24 hr. lab which was far away) and my term paper was due in 2 hrs. I remember scrapping off the toner powder from the cartridge with a butter knife to get the last page printed. Now, I get free laser printers and unlimited suppy of toner cartridges from work (all used for work purposes only?).
