need a little dog help

My roommate is across the country for the time being and I'm taking care of his dog (a welsh corgi.) He's pretty maintenance free but does like a lot of activity. Unfortunately something he's taken to is gnawing/chewing on his left hindquaters, to the point where he's got a bloody/wet little spot back there. How can I get him to stop chewing on himself?

Maybe he has a rash or a parasite or something. I think dogs are smart enough not to self mutilate. Although, I have seen parrots that rip out their feathers when they get bored, so who knows.

Or you could get some bitter apple spray, though I'm not sure you can put it on open wounds.

It is what is called a "hot spot" he has had some sort of allergic reaction could be caused by any number of things. If you have changed his food, change it back, no table scraps. Does he get flea treatment? If so, is he due? Give him a bath with any kind of oatmeal shampoo followed by a medicated shampoo on just that spot. You can get stuff to treat it at walmart or pets mart. Once you put that on him you have to make sure they don't lick/chew it off. You probably don't need an e-collar unless it becomes really bad.
