hello,

i acquired a laserjet 2100 printer and am having some problems. basically, whenever i print stuff... i get ghost prints. does this mean the fuser is needing to be replaced? or will simply replacing the toner fix the problem? i know my problem description is vague... i will get a scan of a test print when i can. in the meantime, any suggestions would be great. thank you.

There is a quick and easy way to tell if replacing the fuser is neccessary, as soon as the page has finished printing rub your thumb over the image, if it comes away from the paper (ie you get black marks on your thumb) then the fuser either needs replacing or it has a piece of paper wrapped around it thereby reducing the heat.

If the fuser is ok then check the transfer roller, DO NOT touch it with your fingers as this will degrade the image quality, it should be charcoal grey, if it is white (paper dust) or appears to have a left over image on it then clean it with a lint free cloth or replace it.

If the transfer roller appears ok then replace the cartridge, if this doesn't work then it could be one of two things, either your corona wire has snapped (removes static charge from the transfer roller to eliminate ghosting) or there's a problem with the laser unit itself, both being very expensive to repair.

Hope this helps

best bet is to go ahead and get a user maint. kit. it will come with the fuser, tranfer roller, and drive rollers. something that needs to be done every 30,000-50,000 pages anyway, and likely has never been done.

then finish out what menth said if it's still doing the ghosting.

thanx for the tips guys. i was looking at getting the maintenance kit, but jeebuz, they're like $200 and up. i think i'm just gonna ebay the thing and look for a new printer (yup... the lazy way out).
